So I’m back again with another potty training update and we definitely have big news! In just two months, Abby has really achieved big accomplishments with her potty training! I am so happy and so very proud of her. We have tried so many times over the past two years and finally, everything really fell into place for her. I know it was Pull-Ups First Flush that really helped her this time. The helpful tips, tools and advice I found on the Pull-Ups website helped me find better ways to encourage her and help her this time around.

So I’m sure you’re wondering, is she potty trained? Well, I can say we are about 85% there! This is so great for her! Abby is now excited about going potty, she loves wearing her new princess panties and she feels like sure a big girl when she goes potty.

I can’t say for sure what it was that we were doing wrong in the past. Perhaps it was nothing, maybe she just wasn’t ready. Or maybe it was one of the great tools from the Big Kid Academy that really helped encourage her. I know she loved the call from Cinderella and she really loved celebrating with us (she’s all about dancing and making noise). Making it as fun as possible really helped her out. While she was good at going potty when we reminded her or took her, she never seemed to remember. She would get so busy playing or coloring or just doing whatever she was busy doing that she didn’t give a second thought to going potty. With the help of the fun celebrating plus the awesome timer, she now knows to stop playing and go potty. The Big Kids Academy has definitely helped us out during our journey, I loved all the great tools and Abby just loved seeing all her favorite Disney characters! The Potty Training Progress Chart and the Video Character Call were, of course, favorites. The Pull-Ups Big Kid App was absolutely perfect for when we were away from home, the timer with Mike and Sulley was especially helpful! I definitely recommend stopping by the website and checking out what all the Big Kid Academy offers!

So here are our big accomplishments over the past two months:

  • Getting better at telling us when she needs to go,
  • Going more in the potty instead of in her pull-up,
  • Waking up dry (or at least not soaked like in the past),
  • No longer scared of the loud flushing sound,
  • Telling us while away from home when she needs to go,
  • Telling others (her aunt and her Mimi) she needs to go potty,
  • Going all day (minus nap & bedtime) in panties with no accidents!

Now that she’s doing so great going potty, we try to always encourage her to go potty even when away from home. Family members have also been great at helping with the potty training, this is especially helpful since she’s been staying with her Aunt Kari and Mimi a lot during all my appointments. Last week, while at her Aunt Kari’s house, she asked to go potty all by herself! And she went! I was so proud of her, just another big accomplishment for her. She was a little unhappy since Aunt Kari did not have a potty seat, Abby wasn’t thrilled with sitting on the big potty. I decided to head to the store to buy her a new soft trainer potty seat that would be easy to carry with us. Yes, she’ll eventually learn to go on the big potty but just starting out, she likes having the potty seat because it helps her feel more confident sitting on the potty (trying to sit on the big potty freaks her out a little, she thinks she’s going to fall in). I love all the new soft trainer potty seats available, the Disney Princess or the Disney Princess Magical Sounds seats are absolutely perfect for my little princess ! I also love all the great Potty Systems now available, these are all perfect for encouraging littles ones, helping to make potty training fun and celebrating the first flush! What’s really awesome, right now, with the purchase of a The First Years Specialty Potty System,  you will receive a free sample pack of Pull-Ups Training Pants to help you get started on your little ones potty training journey!

So, what’s next? Well, as I mentioned, we are about 85% done with our potty training. The next step is just more encouragement, going more often and for long periods of time with just panties, just taking things one step at a time and making sure she is confident during the process. Aside from checking out Pull-Ups website and Big Kid Academy, the best tip I can offer and encouraging your child as much as possible and don’t rush them. Yes, I really wanted Abby to be potty trained long before she turned four but she wasn’t ready. Pushing her actually probably made her want to go less and discouraged her. Abby had a difficult time with potty training and I had to learn to take things at her pace. Sure, I first thought she was just being stubborn but then I realized that her SPD was playing a big role to her potty training delays. She wasn’t always realizing that she needed to go, she easily got distracted by things (like playing) and going potty just didn’t cross her mind, she wasn’t really recognizing the sensation of needing to go. Plus the loud sound of flushing the potty scared her. I finally realized that she needed to do this when she was ready, that things would click for her when it was time. I did all I could for her, I got her a potty seat and pull-ups, I encouraged her and made sure she knew how proud I was of her, I did all the little things like putting up a progress chart and downloading fun apps and making a big deal out of every flush, and in the end it all fell right into place once she was ready. Now she loves going potty! She loves telling family members that she goes potty like a big girl, she loves getting new panties and I can tell she finally is confident and is proud of herself. She’s a big girl now!
