For years, I have watched all the storm reports about tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, etc that wreck havoc and destroy lives. I watched as the Red Cross arrived to help, I listed to many commericals about protecting what’s most important, my heart went out to those affected by the disastors and while I always thought I was prepared, I never really thought it could happen to me.

It did.

Almost four years ago, just after Abby turned one, a tornado hit the base where we were living. It was Abby’s first tornado, to be honest it was my first as well. Tornadoes are common here in AR, the arrival of Spring also brings the start of Tornado Season. Once again, severe weather was headed in our direction and I prepared as I always do. I watched the news, had our important must haves in the hallway, I was ready for yet another storm.

This time was much different. This time, the tornado formed right over our home. It went across the street and touched down, ripping a patch of destruction through housing and completely destroying several friend’s homes. I don’t remember much. I remember walking to the door to see where my husband was, I remember seeing all the guys running for their homes (because of course, all the guy neighbors were outside watching the storm arrive), I remember my husband running up and shoving me and Abby towards the hall. I remember holding her tight, the wind blowing, the lights going out and then the quiet. I had no idea what had happened until friends started calling.

My husband headed out to help, the look on his face when he came back by said it all. It was bad… really bad. I just didn’t know how bad until morning. We were lucky, many friends were not. No one lost their life that day which is a miracle. Home were completely destroyed, some families lost everything, but everyone was safe and we could put things back together.

*This is not our home but is a home the tornado destroyed that terrifying night.

The very next day, Red Cross arrived to help. I didn’t have much experience with Red Cross before this, sure I’ve seen them on TV but never had a first hand experience. They arrived so quickly after the storm and stayed for almost a week making sure everyone was taken care of. It was so great to see someone there helping these families. The Red Cross made sure that those who lost their homes had a place to stay, they made sure families had food, clothing, needs for small children. I even saw some handing out stuffed animals to the children whose homes were destroyed.

I never want to go through another experience like that again; however, I know that living here there will always be the possibility. I think back to that night and I wonder how I can better prepare for next time. Yes, clothing and furniture and stuff can be replaced but what about the important stuff? The things that mean so much, hold so many memories, things that can’t be replaced and that need to be protected? For me it’s memory cards with all of Abby’s pictures and videos, our wedding album, special jewelry, important little things from when Abby was born, my husband’s military ribbons and medals just to name a few. These items don’t cross my mind when a storm hits, all I care about then is protecting what is most important which is my family. But these are items that after the storm, fire, flood… will be gone if I don’t prepare ahead of time. Preparing ahead of time means important “stuff” is protected and I can focus on what is most important to me, protecting my family.
